They will shame you for doing what they secretly wish they had permission to do. Then, if you survive their shame and succeed, they will idolize you for the exact same behavior. They punish the prototype and worship the finished product. Think about how strange that is. A person suppresses parts of themselves because they are afraid of being judged. Then they see somebody else expressing those same parts freely. Part of them thinks: “I wish I could be that honest.” Another part thinks: “If they are allowed to do that, maybe all of these restrictions I placed on myself were never mandatory.” That realization is uncomfortable. So instead of questioning their own restriction, they try to restrict the other person. “Do you know how weird you look?” “Do you know how embarrassing that is?” “Why would you post that?” “Why would you say that out loud?” They assume that deviation must come from a lack of self awareness. They believe that if you could only see yourself through their eyes, you would become embarrassed and return to compliance. But what happens when you already see yourself? What happens when you are completely self aware, understand exactly how you might look, recognize the possibility of judgment, and continue anyway? Now their shame has nowhere to install itself. The internal observer they are trying to create already exists. It simply does not report to them. That is what bothers them. It is easier to believe that somebody is oblivious than to accept that the person sees the same social risk and has consciously decided that the risk does not control them. Because if they can see the risk and continue, maybe you could too. And that is where admiration and resentment begin living beside each other. Before social proof, the person looks strange. After social proof, the same person looks confident. Before success, they are embarrassing. After success, they are authentic. Before everybody understands, they need to stop. After everybody approves, they become somebody you wish you could be. The behavior did not necessarily change. The permission did. People love freedom after somebody else has already survived the consequences of displaying it. They love authenticity after the crowd has certified it as safe. A distant celebrity can be admired because their freedom asks nothing from you. But when somebody accessible, ordinary, or still rising behaves freely in front of you, their existence becomes a live demonstration that another choice is available right now. That is much more threatening. *Part 2 continues in the next post.*
