@alexanderelorenzo: The Fed asked whether AI is making the economy cheaper. The man answering has $3.4 billion riding on the answer. In July the new Fed chairman, Kevin Warsh, created five task forces to rethink how the central bank reads the economy. One of them got a very specific job, and the Fed wrote it themselves. Assess the economic impact of new general purpose technologies, including artificial intelligence, to inform the Federal Reserve's policy judgments. One of the people on that task force is Marc Andreessen. He cofounded the first popular web browser, then built a firm called a16z that invests in startups. It manages about $90 billion. Earlier this year it raised $3.4 billion specifically for AI companies. It's also one of the biggest crypto investors alive. It funded Solana, Compound, dYdX, Optimism and Dapper Labs. Those are the same projects that turned up in Kevin Warsh's own federal ethics filing before he took office. CoinDesk reported it in April. More than thirty crypto investments in total. And the two of them go back. Andreessen posted publicly on January 30, the day of the nomination, that he had known Warsh for thirty years and there was nobody more qualified for the job. Here's why this reaches you. The Fed sets the price of borrowing money, and most money in existence is borrowed money. If AI really is making things cheaper on its own, Warsh doesn't need high rates to fight inflation. He can cut them. And when money gets cheap, the assets that move first are the risky ones. Now the fair part, because it matters. Nothing was hidden. The task forces were announced publicly, with every name attached. Warsh sold the relevant assets before taking office in May, under an ethics pledge, with a certificate of divestiture on record. And he said out loud that the Fed has not outsourced the decision, only the thinking. Nobody broke a rule. They just wrote the question and picked who gets to answer it. Follow for the next one.
