Another Khaleeji practice today. 💃🏻 * Translated the song * Thought about the gestures * Tried to combine the gestures with the steps * Had to remember not to collapse my chest Why is it so difficult for a foreign dancer to learn Khaleeji dance? 1. I don’t understand Arabic. I know some words, but memorising 2 minutes worth of words from a song reminds me of being back at school… memorising poems 🤦🏼‍♀️ Then there is the beat and the steps. Sometimes I don’t even know if I’m marking the right beat 🤷🏼‍♀️ Then I need to think about the gestures, but I also need to act naturally so I’m not overdramatising my facial expressions and arm movements. Then remember to move the hips… AND not let my upper body collapse with the hip movement. 😂 So while you Khaleeji ladies are laughing at my dancing, my brain is telling me: Girl, go and take a vacation… too much information. 😂😂😂 Anyhow… we are getting there 💃🏻 And this song: ماجد المهندس - أنا بلياك ❤️ I found it about a year ago through the Jalsat Wanasah 2017 session. I also watched the video clip of the original song. Today, a year later, I listened to it again and OMG 🫣 The original song has the khisba drum and an Iraqi vibe. A year ago, it just sounded like a song to me. I never noticed these details! Which means, compared to last year, I have already improved. Maybe not so much in my dancing 😂, but in music, taste, understanding instruments and recognising beats, I definitely have. 🎉
