You can put traders in a viewing cage and still trade with them. It doesn’t take up slots in your base that way

For all hoping for a better method. Make a viewing cage. Put a pillar next to the viewing cage, then jump on it, rotate your character to the side hugging the viewing cage, then jump off and you’ll be able to run around the inside of viewing cage! You can talk to merchants without entering viewing cage, but sometimes they clump up or don’t get close enough to the edge.

If you build an observing station you can have all of your merchants in there without them actually taking up pal slots from your base,, granted they might walk away from you but that's why I also keep my king chillet in there to remind them of better...
