@futurecheme: If your major doesn’t match your desired workplace, apply anyway. Most #engineering fields are not only very transferable, but highly overlapping, aka, you better believe they need #environmentalengineering in #nuclear facilities for wastewater treatment and more. I’d also advise anyone in this situation to sign up for technical electives in the fields that interest them. In this case, Ryan should take a course or two in nuclear power and plant design if he can. What questions do you have? Check out the Engineering Impact Forum for more one on one help from Ruha and other experts in the community. See the link in my bio for more.
The nuclear reactor is only a portion of a nuclear power plant. This student has a great background for the vast cooling water system of the plant and possibly the electrical turbines as well. Outside of academia, technical disciplines tend to converge and your specific university curriculum quickly means little after your first day on the job. For example my ChemE doctoral dissertation was on energy efficient distillation but my career was in technical fabrics for consumer products.

I’m very interested in Nuclear Engineering as well and my major is Electrical Engineering. Is this something that I can work with as well?
