Derechos aren’t typically “unexpected” there is usually a lot of notice, especially when a storm system has the potential to become a derecho. It’s also I think similar in a sense of a tornado—they have to survey the damage to see if it meets the criteria for a derecho before they classify it as one

when the derecho years ago hit iowa the news talked about it as a simple thunderstorm! Nothing could’ve prepared anyone for this type of storm!!

My first derecho was in 2020 and it was crazy. My windows in my house were leaking and I was holding towels up and watched trees fall and start swinging around. Very scary.

listen we had one of these come through at 7am and dude my house was shaking my windows were shaking. we lost power for 2 days some lost power for 3-5 days

If there’s ever a storm tornado whatever shelter in place. I know that the instinct is to go home but imagine suddenly everyone thinking the same thing and now you’re all stuck. If you can shelter in place do it. There’s obvious some exception like you left your kids at home (older watching younger) maybe someone elderly or animals. Obviously do it with caution. I mean if the tornado is right out the door then yeah get your booty inside.

I was caught in a derecho on my way to Florida. Saw a semi flip in front of us. My dad is zipping through traffic and jamming the music while my sister and I are in the back shaking.
