Waaay back in the day you had to have the advisor’s approval to cut a legacy. And then call her mama and explain to mama why her legacy was being cut. It had to be serious to cut one.

Absolutely NO ONE wanted to make that phone call if a legacy was cut. Now they claim it’s an “unfair advantage” ….. my daughter got in right before all the non sense went down.

In the 90s we had to CALL the alumna on the phone to tell her why weren’t taking her granddaughter/daughter/sister if we dropped a legacy 😳

As a JUST retired (graduated) sorority girlie, legacies mean nothing anymore. If anything, NPC strongly encourages legacies to “explore the best chapter for them” to 1) prevent them from feeling pressured to join a chapter just for legacy sake and 2) prepare them to get dropped from their legacy chapter.

I was absolutely not someone my sorority wanted but my GRANDMA was at the same chapter a million years ago so I was paired with the VP of recruitment for every event 😂 legacy was taken crazy seriously at my tiny school.

Former VP recruitment here- if we wanted to cut a legacy we had to call the relative of the legacy and tell them why we were not inviting them back!

mine was required to ask legacies back after the first round and to give legacies a bid if they made it to pref night. they could be cut in between!

I wish it still held weight still.. but not like it used to. however it also gives women that didn’t have family sorority affiliation a disadvantage. Chapters shouldn’t be taking legacies unless it’s clearly mutual. Sometimes legacies don’t want to follow the same path.

Rushed in ‘04 at OU- my roommate got cut as an IN HOUSE legacy. So much drama. Learned that year she was the absolute worst though so i get it

Everybody is a legacy now… my daughter is a Zeta legacy because of me and an Alpha Chi legacy because of my sister… imagine if legacies were “guaranteed” a bid now lol… would be crazy…

I rushed in 2015 and a sorority I was a legacy for cut me by accident. I didn’t have them on my schedule and didn’t think anything of it but then I got a frantic call from someone at Panhellenic asking if I was interested in going back because they could slot me in during one of my breaks. The legacy thing used to be so serious!

cousin was a legacy for Kappa Kappa Gamma at SMU. my cousin went to SMU. Kappa cut her like the very First night.

Listen, I am not a legacy, but when I first started and a legacy came in, they were ours. My last year a rep from nationals came in and said we don’t have to vote in legacies… you better believe we still did.

Happens all the time in SEC, especially in large sororities. If you don’t come in with an A+ resume, you’re higher on the chopping block because there’s a time limit on when they can get cut.
