Live near a library and the kids are there every day. Kids are reading.

I get what you're saying. Words can do damage to an already bruised ego. When I see teachers online saying kids can't read I've never seen it directed at anyone in particular, that's not saying some aren't. I've taken it as it's their way of getting it out there because some parents aren't showing up to hear it or they do and aren't doing anything still to help. Most ppl are on social media and to get the attention and get word out that there's a problem you have to go where everyone is. Now, how it's being said, if in a harsh way, can be reworded, but it seems for so long no one has listened and the teachers' hands are tied to what they can do and they don't have the resources, money, or time to do more. Too much is being asked of the teachers. They need help. You are correct about kids will read things they're interested in but the teachers aren't allowed to let them read whatever they want and then grade them on it. They have an agenda of course as to what they have to teach and we all know a lot of that stuff is boring & does not relate to us. In my opinion, from the ones I've seen do it, I don't think what they're saying online is coming from a bad place.

This post is the best advice. We have to help them find books about their interests so they’ll want to read. Then we have to talk about their interests and what they learned to help develop comprehension and communication skills.

As a middle school English teacher for 20 years it pisses me off so bad to see teacher "influencers" talk shit about their students not being able to read well or not being motivated to read.

I teach a reading intervention class. I let them choose their reading books/content. We don’t get get on here to “talk sh*t” about them. When we discuss, it’s to bring awareness bc let’s be real THEY ARE STRUGGLING with comprehension and fluency and parents DO NOT help us or teach to value of education at home.. I don’t think people who aren’t in the classroom understand the severity. As someone who has to analyze the data , it is something that needs to be talked about. We need to go vote the people out who are defunding education and making it hard for teachers/districts to have proper resources. I’m a parent and a teacher, I see both sides.

also, bullying them about how they can’t read isn’t gonna help either.

I mean idk. Are they talking 💩 or are they sounding the alarm? Now to your point, if we are going to point out a problem, there needs to be solutions behind it; parenting tips on how invest time in education, book recommendations, free resources available, etc.

As an elder millennial, we had a whole ass book list to read during the summer months when I was in elementary school. Of course, I thought it was stupid.. but still did the required reading during the summer. It made me appreciate BOOKS by the time I was in middle school and well into my adult years.

Absolutely! Let them read what they love. Commenting because I agree and want you to get paid. 💜

Share the wishlist Sis. I’ll pay for some books. And I work at a library and I’ll share it with my colleagues too.

This was me as a kid. I thought I was a bad reader, but the assigned reading was just not interesting to me. If I could go back in time, I’d get to know the librarian at my local public library and ask for some titles that might interest me.

Made my niece (who struggles with reading) complete the summer reading program through the local library. She checked out the books SHE was interested in. I just wanted her to read.
