@popculture_1: Old English was a language spoken in Britain from around 450 AD - 1150 AD It evolved from West Germanic dialects spoken by Angles, Saxons and Jutes in the 5th century. Thorn (Þ) is a letter belonging to Old English which is equivalent to the phonetics of (th) Today thorn is not used in English and is archaic, it is instead used in the Icelandic alphabet, likewise to how the letter (ð) was once used in Old English but has now moved on to being Icelandic. (Þ) and (ð) were used interchangeably for the sound ‘th’ in Old English scribes. West Saxon, Mercian, Northumbrian and Kentish are all dialects of Old English Northumbrian dialect spanning from Northern England to Southern Scotland West Saxon dialect belonging to the Wessex region Mercian dialect which covers what is now the Midlands Kentish dialect is from the modern county of Kent. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, Old English evolved into Middle English as a result of Norman French rule, while commoners spoke English, this eventually caused languages to merge which saw grammar changes and borrowing from French and Latin vocabulary.
