@merrykennedy647: Love is one of them. The other is quieter and far more common. It is the plain fear of the silence that leaving would leave behind. Seen from a distance the two are hard to tell apart. Same dinners, same photos, same shared address. But underneath, one couple is choosing each other and the other is just avoiding an empty apartment. A relationship built on fear of being alone is not really a relationship at all. Call it shelter. And shelter has one rule. You do not ask much of the roof over your head, you just stay dry. So you shrink. You stop naming what you need. You call low expectations peace. There is a test almost no one runs. Ask if you would still be here if you were completely fine on your own. Not lonely. Not scared. Just calm and whole by yourself. If the honest answer is no, you are not in love with the person. You are in love with not being alone. Two whole people choosing each other is a different thing entirely. They could survive apart, and they stay anyway. That is the only version that holds when life gets hard. ... You do not have to leave anything today. Just sit with one question and answer it honestly. Am I here because I truly want this person, or because I am afraid of the silence that would be left without them.
