@thefiifiansah: “Yefri Tuobodom” by Nkasei was released in the mid-2000s as part of their Action album. The song became one of the defining records from the project, helping the album win Hiplife Album of the Year at the 2006 Ghana Music Awards. The song was as controversial as it was popular, stirring ethnic tensions and provoking strong reactions from sections of Ghanaian society. Yet, through the production genius of Appietus, “Yefri Tuobodom” became bigger than the controversy surrounding it. The infectious production, humour and delivery had people dancing even as debates around the song continued. Nkasei, made up of Naa K and Shy first met at a rap festival in Nima in 1995. Recognising each other’s potential and chemistry, they decided to form a group. By 2000, after securing a producer, they signed with Abib Records and released their first album. I like to think of Nkasei as Ghana’s answer to OutKast on the Hiplife scene. They dressed how they felt, embraced eccentricity and freely said whatever was on their minds. There was an unpredictability to them that made them difficult to box in. Their approach to rap was equally distinctive, clever, witty and effortlessly humorous without sacrificing lyrical ability. They understood that Hiplife could make you laugh, dance and still pay attention to the words. Nkasei’s contribution to Hiplife cannot be downplayed.
