short answer: we don’t know, but all great apes are ticklish. so our great ancestor was a tickler.

I hate being tickled. It doesn't make me laugh. It makes me cry and very upset.

maybe it could be a sort of survival check? if a mother tickled her baby and the baby laughed and reacted, it meant that the baby was alive and well. breathing well in response to pressure (exercises the lungs while laughing) responsive to swat away the tickler. just a crackpot theory but maybe thats why it feels so fun to be the tickler. hearing laughter from somebody you love and maybe subconsciously its like "okay they are good and healthy"

iirc even rats laugh when tickled on their stomach, their sound is too high pitched for humans to hear

but the fact we can't tickle ourselves remains the biggest mystery to me. I can poke, prod, and tickle my underarms, sides, neck, etc and absolutely nothing happens. but the second my boyfriend does it I'm on the floor threatening his life through uncontrollable laughter.

TLDR: biologists continue struggle to understand the benefits of play between caretakers and children in highly social species, as if play behavior associated with “weak spots” that aren’t actually vulnerable to health, wouldn’t have evolutionary meaning in teaching young in a biologically safe manner, in a highly intelligent, highly social taxa.
