VPN Explained How Does a VPN Actually Work In this video, Cloud X Berry explains how a VPN works in a simple and beginner-friendly way. You open Google from your laptop at home and the page loads. Between your keyboard and Google's servers, that request has already crossed your own router, your internet service provider and a stretch of open internet — and it travelled all of it exactly as it left your device. That is the normal path. A VPN changes it, and the change is smaller and more specific than most people assume. We start with the version that has no VPN, drawn out end to end: device, router, ISP, the open internet, then Google. Nothing is wrapped and nothing is hidden. Your ISP sees every destination you reach, and Google sees a connection arriving straight from your home network. Neither of those is a bug — both come from the same cause: your traffic travels the internet in the open, exactly as it was sent. From there we build the idea up piece by piece: what a VPN client and a VPN server actually are, what the encrypted tunnel between them really is, and what wrapping a packet means — a sealed package inside another package, where only the outside one carries the delivery address. We follow one request all the way out and all the way back, then the effects that fall out of that: what your ISP can still see and what it cannot, why Google sees the VPN server's IP instead of yours, and what happens to DNS. Then split tunnelling, and the use most people actually meet a VPN through — reaching an internal company system from home. We finish with the part most explanations skip: a VPN is not anonymity, your traffic still leaves the VPN server in the open, and the provider becomes a point of trust. CHAPTERS 0:00 The path your traffic takes today 0:21 What VPN actually stands for 0:34 Installing a client, connecting to a server 0:53 Without a VPN, then with one 1:03 Wrapping the traffic to reach the VPN server 1:20 A sealed package inside another package 1:30 What your ISP can and cannot see 1:43 The VPN server forwards it to the destination 1:55 Google sees the VPN server's IP, not yours 2:15 The response comes back the same way 2:41 DNS through the tunnel 3:05 Split tunnelling: work traffic vs personal 3:20 Remote access to a company network 3:53 What a VPN actually gives you 4:17 Why a VPN is not anonymity 4:42 The whole flow, once through WHO THIS IS FOR Anyone who has been told to "turn the VPN on" without ever being told what it does, developers who keep seeing VPN in network diagrams and want the idea to actually click, and anyone interviewing for a role where networking or system design comes up. #vpn #networking #cybersecurity #encryption #privacy
