I’m honoured that my PhD research on inequality in cricket has been featured in @Sky Sports Cricket documentary 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲. The ICEC found that English cricket is deeply entrenched in systemic racism, sexism, and class-based discrimination. Beyond the Boundary shines a light on the lived experiences of British South Asian cricketers and the structural obstacles preventing so many from progressing from grassroots to the elite level. Despite high levels of participation, their talent is rarely reflected at the top of the game. Why does this continue to happen? What forces are driving such a steep drop-off? These inequalities are not rooted in culture, but in structures built to exclude. The data is damning: South Asian women are overrepresented at youth level yet underrepresented at professional level, with just 5 currently in the system. My research also revealed that while women from state school backgrounds are better represented than in the men’s game (69.3% of the pathway), private schools remain significantly overrepresented at 28.7%.
