@nightflightseverywhere: There’s something powerful about parents understanding that raising a child eventually means preparing them to build a family of their own. Marriage shouldn’t require abandoning the people who raised you, but it does create a new commitment that deserves to be protected. If you choose someone as your husband or wife, they shouldn’t spend their life wondering whether you’ll stand beside them when your family disagrees with them. Of course, loyalty doesn’t mean blindly defending your spouse when they’re genuinely wrong, tolerating harmful behavior, or cutting off family simply because your partner demands it. Healthy love still leaves room for honesty and accountability. But there is a difference between holding your spouse accountable and allowing other people to disrespect or exclude them while you quietly accept it. The person you marry becomes your teammate in the home and future you’re building together. Your parents can remain deeply important, but they shouldn’t be given the power to constantly undermine the marriage you’ve chosen. Maybe one of the greatest gifts parents can give their adult children is understanding that eventually their role changes: they don’t lose their child when that child gets married—they simply respect that the family they raised them to build now deserves its own loyalty, boundaries, and protection.
