A solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon that God has placed within the precise order of His creation. However, witnessing it can also serve as a spiritual reminder for us: the universe is neither without purpose nor without order, and human beings should recognize the power and greatness of God and remain humble before Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said regarding an eclipse: “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone; they are two signs among the signs of God.” Therefore, when an eclipse occurred, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged people to pray, make supplications, and remember God. We should not say that every eclipse is necessarily a sign of God’s punishment or anger. Scientifically, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blocks part of the Sun’s light from our view. From a religious perspective, this same phenomenon can be an opportunity for us to reflect on the greatness and precise order of God’s creation. A solar eclipse is both a natural phenomenon within the order of creation and, for a believer, an opportunity to reflect, pray, and turn our attention toward God.
