@nxthompson: Anthropic has a new way of watermarking text that may well make it much easier to determine what was generated by humans and what was generated by AI. It's not perfect. What if you write something and Claude edits it? What if you use Claude to write something and then you edit it? But I think it's a great step in helping to draw the boundaries between human work and AI work, which very much need to be drawn.
it's a terrible idea because it gives people a false sense of certainty. Like in your edit example, someone who had something almost entirely human created could be accused of AI use and take massive reputational harm. And the people who figure out how to beat it can falsely claim a moral high ground. AI is here. We can't get around it. It's impossible to ever know with certainty how much AI was used in creation of something. And it doesn't matter! Quality is what matters. Trust is what matters. The how doesn't matter.

I don’t think we can say it’s categorically good or bad because it kind of depends what domain the writing occurs in. Novels can’t be judged by the same standards as legal brief. In one domain, the consumer is seeking an outcome (law) so originality and attribution do not matter as much with the novel, where most readers assume they are connecting to an author’s consciousness and lived experience.

I think they might be using the EU reg as an excuse to implement this insurance measure/future proofing feature in an effort to gain a positive public perspective to a move that would otherwise be seen as them just...covering their behinds.

I’m concerned that AI companies will use this to claim copyright on all the text we generate with their models (after scraping all our copyrighted data to train their models). Thoughts?

I don’t agree that watermarks should be included as what is the relevance? In law, do the embedded watermarks disclose the unauthorized practice of law by a chatbot?
