Kratom is honestly scary. I’m a psychology major atm we talk about how It mimics opioid addictions. Also there are stimulant pills sold at the gas station that can cause major heart problems. They usually NEVER contain what they say they do. It’s usually a high amount of stimulant. Purchasing gas station supplements is not ideal.

You’re talking down to him. Why not ask him and have a real conversation with him as a young adult. “Hey why did you choose these supplements, what do they do?” Be curious with him. You never know, it might have been a well thought out purchase but you immediately think he impulsively purchased the supplements without thought.

Kratom is still sold at gas stations…….I work EMS and have had SEVERAL Kratom overdoses. The stuff sold is also SUPER addictive, just like heroin is. Please please please educate yourselves and your children on Kratom.! What they are selling isn’t like the actual Kratom plant, it’s synthetic (7-OH) and unregulated. I’ve had a teenager overdose end up intubated on a vent machine because of Kratom. I’ve had a friend become addicted to it, overdose, and almost die from it. I honestly don’t understand how it’s still allowed to be sold period let alone so freely at gas stations. It’s wild to me

Keep having these conversations!! I started drinking energy drinks and buying apple cider vinegar and taking way to much apple cider vinagar for “gut health” it was not for gut health and my parents thought nothing of it said nothing and it actually did damage to my esophagus cause I didn’t know I had to dilute it and between that and drinking 9-10 energy drinks a week not knowing any better actually did a lot more damage than you’d think and that’s not even like supplements or anything it’s literally vinegar and mini redbull

I wasn’t allowed to have a debit card until college and I think that should be a standard. I never thought to buy any supplements/ potentially dangerous stuff since I didn’t have access to money like that.

I work in a psychiatric hospital, we have so many people come in, full drug induced psychosis from things they got at gas stations and smoke shops and it’s mostly teens. I say steer clear from it all period

YES! We made a rule that they needed to research companies/products before buying. Addiction sucks and ESPECIALLY as regulations are getting more lax, you have to be extra careful.

There was an episode of saved by the bell where Jesse would take caffeine pills and those can be highly addictive ever since then I’m careful with caffeine and I think every young kid should watch it

My son is now 15, and yesssss. They’ll go in the store thinking it’s no big deal because it’s being sold at a store and there’s no age limit.

Having a debit card (as long as it’s his own money he’s worked for or for birthdays/christmas) is not a privilege that’s his own money and his bank account. I do understand if he’s under 18 you have to open the account with him or have some sort of kid account as my mom did with me and she also told us if our account ever got under $100 then she’d shut the account down. But the debit card is not a privilege it’s a right as long as it’s his money and account. I do agree that having a car (that you bought) or being allowed to go to the gas station is a privilege.

They shouldn’t even sell those supplements and stimulants to anyone under 21! I’ve def had these talks with my teens. “Anything that goes into your body is directly connected to your health. That needs to be an open dialogue just in case one reacts with the other, etc.” My boys are athletes and very active - if they’re dragging enough to need caffeine, they’re either not resting or not fueling properly with food.

“Hey, I just wanted to let you know that when it involves supplements and things that you ingest, I need you to run that by me or your dad before taking them. I want you to be safe and I need to be able to know what you’re taking in the case of an emergency. This isn’t a suggestion nor a demand, but it is a boundary because I care for you and it is that serious.”

Please make sure he's aware that caffeine overdose is easy for teens to hit with energy drinks and pills. And there is no treatment for it. Kids die every year from "just caffeine."
