I have a hard time explaining this, but I wish people remember that Melungeons exist. I love the casting being diverse and that does represent Appalachia, but we do have to remember that Jennifer Lawrence was born in Kentucky. Love the actress you have here but (I think) one is Mexican and the other Māori. I’m Appalachian and I have a hard time explaining my heritage to people as I don’t feel close enough to call myself native even though I can trace and know I’m closely related to them, I just look very white. My culture growing up was Appalachian and explaining that it can be a mix of freed African American, native, and poor white people is hard as if you take away one the others can’t fit. I don’t call myself Irish, Italian, native, or African, only Appalachian. It feels very ruff explaining that there isn’t much representation of Appalachian in popular media expect for the hunger games. (Again no hate, if these girls were casted I wouldn’t mind and I love the cast so far in all the movies).

The girl who played Clove was actually quite accurate for his book Katniss looked. Katniss was short in the books because of lack of food while growing. She es described as being a “skinny little girl from the seem.” It’s also why she was able to climb the tree that Cato was too heavy to climb. It’s why Clove was able to knock her down because Clove was much bigger than Katniss in the books. That’s what made her such an underdog and face of the revolution because statistically she wasn’t a threat.

we don't know that this actress has any Indigenous heritage, nor her character, and she has not said as much. as far as we know, she is just Latino, and not every Latino or person of Mexican heritage has any Native American heritage. being Mexican or Latino does not automatically mean you are Native American, and I have to assume that's why people are fancasting this actress (who, again, is not confirmed to be Indigenous at ALL) as Katniss, who is suggested to be.

Honestly the best casting would be to get an eastern band of cherokee actress who is mixed native and give her grey eyes if she doesn't already have them. That would be the most accurate to book katniss that we would be getting. Everyone loves throwing Melungeon around, but modern Melungeons primarily consist of one ethnic group with a distant Melungeon ancestor. Yes we have the Melungeon appalachian culture still, but ethnically our ancestors were the true Melungeons. The most we can argue is that District 12 is a futuristic form of modern Melungeons from the eastern band of cherokee being forced into a district with surrounding groups because the native implications behind Katniss father ARE purely native in many ways.
