@kadenwatson11: Lots of recent movie adaptations have inspired discussion about the nature of adaptations themselves. So let’s discuss, what qualifies as an adaptation? #kadensmovieclub #adaptation #filmtok #movies
The discourse around The Odyssey has been EXHAUSTING! It’s an adaptation. It’s 3 hours and if Nolan adapted the entire thing beat for beat, it would have been 4-5 hours long which no one would want to sit through. Another good example is the upcoming Resident Evil movie. People are so hung up on snow and a smart phone that they can’t see that Zach Cregger isn’t trying to adapt any one game. He’s trying to recreate the feeling of playing the game which is the best approach. Every adaptation before this one frankly sucked and now we have one from a director that has shown he has talent and vision. And he’s passionate about the source material but he realizes the games are already the best at being what they are and you can’t recreate or best what has already been done perfectly. People need to relax. Sorry for the rant. lol

My thoughts this: The more loyal the adaptation, the less reason for it to exist. In my opinion it’s true for both book and video game adaptations.

Any work will need to be changed when it moves from one medium to another, or one time period to another, because expectations change and film and novels just operate differently. The Odyssey going deep on how the fall of Troy broke Zeus' law and thus broke a pillar of society was one of the best parts, IMO.
Also something can potentially be adapted so extremely it loses connection to the source material, and I would argue that it's Catwoman from 2004.

Clueless is literally an adaptation of Emma by Jane Austin

The Shining is a great example. I loved the book, and so when I saw the Kubrick film I hated it because it was so different from the source material. At the time in the 90s they made a mini series that’s closer to the book and I appreciated it more. As I got older I revisited the Shining and became obsessed with it as a film masterpiece. It’s now one of my favorite films of all time but I had to divorce myself from the opinions I once had and view it as something inspired by Stephen King’s story as it took on a new entity in Kubrick’s film.

we have a perfect example for this at the moment, look at how book fans are reacting to House of the dragon vs project hail Mary. HOTD book fans are mad but PH books fans are beyond excited... obviously HOTD is doing something wrong

I know “She’s the man” with Amanda Bynes was based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night which not a lot of people knew about.

Hot take, the movie O from the 90s is one of the best adaptations ever done. It’s an updated version of Othello.

My opinion on adaptations changes depending on how much I like the original work and how many times it’s been adapted into that medium beforehand

That time the director for the Halo TV show decided he didn't need to know what the game/lore/books were about 😭

Love this take! I hate when people complain about changes from the source material, I just want a good movie, that’s it. People complaining about casting is by far the most shallow form of the complaints, people were slating The Odyssey and the new Harry Potter series before they have even seen it, so shallow, so stupid, I hate it

love this take! as a reader I've always struggled with liking film and tv adaptations bc of how much is changed, but I've been trying to learn to view them separately now so I can let myself form a true opinion instead of just comparing them from the first second. It's making things much more enjoyable!

that's what I don't like the live action How to train your dragon. They took an amazing movie and copy pasted it without breathing new life into it

The Odyssey is perfect for a discussion on Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality. Nolan’s adaptation just entered an existing chain of adaptations. Homeric poetry → translations → paintings → sculpture → theater → opera → television → literature → video games → modern retellings → academic interpretations → popular culture → Nolan. For millions, The Odyssey, will be mediated through Nolan… not Homer. Interesting.
