The treasury secretary Scott Bessent just sold 10B in euros to bail out Japan because they were going to dump USA bonds. They needed to stop this because selling them means there’s less demand for American bonds. And less demand means that the USA has to pay higher yields on their bonds. Which means that when they go to borrow the $900B in the fall, they’ll have to pay more to borrow it. And they already can’t afford to pay the $96 billion a month in interest that they pay now so if it increases, they’re screwed. But, their biggest buyer is Japan. And Japan is selling. The euro on the other hand is stronger. Amazon and alphabet aren’t buying American bonds. They’re buying European bonds at record rates. Scott Bessent wasn’t trying to rescue Japan when he did this. He’s rescuing America. American debt is 39T and their GDP IS 38T. America is insolvent. They’re trying to add another 1.5 trillion for this war that they can’t win and it’s just messing with the global economy. The tariffs have increased inflation and the only way to control that is to increase interest rate rates but if they do, they just speed up the process. The administration has alienated the world so nobody’s coming to rescue them. But the linchpin for the crash is going to get pulled sooner or later. The question isn’t if…it’s when.
