As someone who reads medical school application essays, trauma dumping is a major turn off. Students forget this is not a poem to be published but why we should invest in you

Sorry I’m asking again! But since you said this topic might be too meta (write about the time in class where we had a presentation and I talked about my love for monkeys and half the class did the same topic of loving monkeys and it made my love for it seem common and that experience led to me creating a business that was known as common but I made it special to me) would it be better if I removed the business part and stuck to how it changed my perspective on just because it’s common doesn’t mean I can’t make it special to me

Storytelling in what way, if you don’t mind me asking? Do you mean like a ‘once upon a time’ type of storytelling, or writing your essay more like narrative writing, if that makes sense?

i might write mine around whiteboards (as a metaphor maybe) and how they opened up my thinking and problem solving (my major is math, and coming from two math nerd parents, i never actually liked it till the 10th grade.) my first sentence was, “If my house ever caught fire, the first object I would grab before my Marvel comic books would be my whiteboard.” following with what i have on it right now which is describing a cacophony of arrows and paragraphs trying to plan out my passion project which is an AI agent built to help neurodivergents with understanding mathematics! is it good enough?

What if I wrote about my self development through the lenses on how my room changes: “joy and sadness are emotions that both can be experienced silently, however, my environment is the loudest piece of evidence of how far I have come.”

what if I'll put "I have 20/20 vision in the darkness, but I am blind in the light." as my hook to tell I'm used to bad days that happy days feels strange and fake to me

Would it be a good idea to write about when I was 10 and I almost drowned in the ocean, and how that made me want to become a lifeguard?

Would it be a good idea for me to write about my FLEX exchange year? Or me fundraising, going door to door alone in my national costume, for a trip to a place that I haven’t even dreamed of (Hawaii) during my exchange year?

Ok I understand what you’re trying to say with the trauma thing, but you could have phrased it better because no, not everyone has experienced trauma. There are people that live very sheltered lives and it is not up to an individual to decide what they consider “trauma” it’s up to a therapist or other professional. That’s all

Do you think my essay will sound immature if it’s about me struggling with double standards for men and women in my culture? I’m trying to relate it to how I’ve grown as a person and how I’ve learned how divisions of expectation work in a family, but I feel like all the good essays I see are on such small topics and moments that connect to bigger ideas? Do u think I should switch my topic?

Could I talk about how I am a woman in a female dominated sport (for context a varsity female wrestler) and how the expectations of it being male dominated allowed myself to push myself and prove the stigma wrong about women in male dominated fields all while how it shaped how as a woman wrestling allowed me to feel comfortable in spaces where women aren’t usually “accepted” the same as a man changing my confidence dynamics?

What if I started my essay by describing myself putting on my mascara every morning and looking at my eyes i inherited from my Caucasian mom and concealer to match my olive skin tone given to me by my Japanese dad. And then begin to talk about how I’ve struggled to find a connection to my cultures that I am related to by blood. But then shift to talking about how while I was trying to figure out who I was through my culture, i realized that I have gained my traits through my experiences and friends. For example, I’ve gained my outgoing personality through my experiences living in a predominantly Hispanic border town partaking in quinceañeras… and how I learned to be a generous and thoughtful person through my Chinese friends who’s grandma packs extra dumplings for them to share with me at lunch. Closing by sharing that Ive realized I have become who I am through my experiences with other cultures, even if I myself do not come from that culture.
