Counter point though: I am 50 and a lot of us high grade earners were not able to turn those grades into financial gain. This is a symptom of a larger disease. There is literally no company looking at the GPA of a brilliant history major- if someone has money and connections they will do better than the best student. If an instructor has connections, they will pass along their favorite students… so what are grades for really?

Fun Fact: Middlebury College in Vermont has acquiesced to parental requests for a staffer to give a student a daily wake-up call. Why? “Customer service” Are some families purchasing a commodity rather than an education?

Pass/fail, when failing is almost impossible makes college a very expensive participation trophy.

These kids are going to be our surgeons, civil engineers, astrophysicists😳 Part of the educational process is learning resilience, intellectual and emotional flexibility, not just memorizing factoids approved by the daughters of the confederacy and heritage foundation.

fully agreed. AND I hated giving grades to kids as a teacher. i either watched their mental health tank or was expected to lie to them about their abilities. I hated this. and I watched kids go to college knowing they had been lied to about their abilities so they were set up to fail at college. this was a huge part of my burnout

This is definitely not how grading (marking) works in the UK. 😅 I am working my bum off for “lower distinction” (similar to an A-). The lecturer who leads my program is American and she frequently says that she wishes she could grade more like the American system here because I think she feels bad handing out so many lower marks.

Why should they stress over GPAs when *gestures at everything* … make college free and I’ll care about how they’re grading these kids. Forced curves are just as stupid as P/F

I do believe that all of this started when we stopped holding a student back in a grade if they were less than a 2.5 GPA.

Why rise to the challenge when you can just wait for the challenge to be removed? (Adds this to the list of why I hate it here.)

Agree. I did terrible my first semester. It woke me up and taught me that college meant I had to study more and party less.

Maybe think of why they are doing this? It’s never just about student welfare/mental heath - maybe the reason - no need to pay Profs/TA for grading exams/ papers, or maybe not having to deal with the messiness of developing exams papers esp in the age of AI etc

Hundred percent agree. They’re supposed to be stressed out over grades that’s what’s supposed to motivate and encourage people to perform better! Competition can be extremely healthy!

There other day, I had to walk my students (step-by-step), how to calculate variability. I We finish a problem together, and I ask if they had any questions. A students then asks “How do you calculate an average?”.………🤦🏻‍♀️I hadn’t “shown” them that bc I (wrongly) assumed they knew how to

Some of these institutions charge such exorbitant tuition/fees, attracting a demanding, affluent clientele. Is this part of their expanding definition of customer service?

Oh, I see. I thought you were talking about a system like at UC Santa Cruz prior to 2001. It wasn’t just pass/no pass, it was written evaluations.
