the movie horsegirl is exactly what psychosis can look like and the fact that no one in the movie ever really takes it seriously is also extremely realistic

Most people only understand depression or anxiety and can’t comprehend that there can be other symptoms or disorders.

When I had psychosis I thought by me not eating I was reversing global warming. I had small papers stuck by my window and when they moved in the wind I thought it was proof that I was cooling the earth and I genuinely felt the air cooling around me, and when they didn’t move it seemed to “always” be when I ate something.

Every time I listen to this explanations, it makes me remember my experience every time I had woken up still dreaming. My imagination mixes with my reality and makes sense.

Psychosis made me believe I was the antichrist. I have a family history so I was certain if it happened to me I would be able to logic my way out of it. I could in fact not and ended up pretty much barricading myself away in my room for weeks

I have never experienced it…I assess and treat it…and I would describe it like being in a nightmare you can’t wake up from…the things people describe sound awful…scary…unstable.

I don't like when people frame psychosis from the east as typically being a positive experience. Although positive psychotic experiences may be more commonly endorsed in non-Western societies, our findings do not support the notion that they represent a more benign, and hence less distressing aspect of human experience. Rather, the experience of psychotic phenomena may be just as, if not more, distressing in African than in European culture. I think it invalidates the psychosis that non-western societies experience, it's very real and very distressing and it's misrepresentative to say that it's normally positive.

Psychosis had me believing there was a dead cat in our Christmas tree, I was speaking to people only i could see. Everything was 100% real to me, scared the shit out of my children. it was so terrible to experience and until you experience it you can't fathom how real the hallucinations are.

i wonder if we do have ppl with positive hallucinations in the west but they dont recognize their symptoms as the same mental issue so they never get diagnosed with the proper MHI. super interesting. the whole "shaman" thing is interesting too bc I wonder how it affected the native cultures before USA and if their societal structure made it easier for ppl with the issue to live with others

I think people just can’t get it through their head that in psychosis, yes you really do believe your delusions. Imagine something that you know very well to be true, and now imagine being told that it’s not true at all and you’re having a mental health crisis. You wouldn’t just accept that it wasn’t real

be careful because with psychosis and schizophrenia, we talk about negative and positive symptoms as symptoms that take away (sleep, functionality, etc) and symptoms that add (hallucinations, delusions, etc). so i got a little confused on your verbiage lol

Psychosis literally mean reality is distorted in some way. That can present as small paranoia, small distortions in reality, large distortions of reality or it can present as command, auditory, or visual hallucinations. There’s so many ways psychosis presents itself, but if you are not trained, you don’t know how to look for it.

I know someone who’s going through it, completely has lost everything. He was a defense attorney and has racked up 5 felonies and 2 misdemeanors over the last year. The thing is some of his delusions were kind of based on reality (hear me out). At his stay in a mental hospital, he heard people screaming but this made him think staff were severely hurting them so he was scared of professionals. He had been SAd as a child, found out who the guy was, reached out to others who may have been hurt, but then this turned into delusions that there were people in a trafficking ring after him. And think about that in the context of today. He also had exonerated someone who had been wrongfully convicted of murder and then became paranoid that the actual killer would find him and kill him. So are these things fully logical? No but they came from somewhere. While he could describe many other symptoms as well and could not function in daily life, he still suffered from anosognosia
