As a cosmetologist, I did not know this about black box dye . And I appreciate you sharing this information!! I have avoided perms because I never felt educated in them well enough to do them properly.

I’ve had an interaction like this recently actually, except it wasn’t with a perm. It was with henna. a girl reached out to me wanting to get highlights. She at first wanted no bleach color and I told her that was not an option and then I told her even bleach color is not an option because there is henna in her hair I will not be able to perform any type of lightning service but can still do a haircut or treatment if she’d like. It’s truly as simple as that, it’s OK to say no sometimes.

and this is why cosmetology programs/boards need to be regulated more across the country. i knew this, you knew this, but there are licensed stylists that genuinely were not taught this info cause so many beauty schools genuinely just suck.

I am the only one in my salon who actively does perms and the first question I always ask is “do you have color on your hair?” Followed by “did you do this color at home, or was it done in a salon?” If they ask why that is important I immediately go in to talking about the metallic salts. I will not perm box dyed hair and everyone in my salon knows that I will immediately say no, and my boss will back me 10000%. I wish all stylists knew that it is ok to tell a client “no” because the clients are not the professionals.

Black box dye been a problem for years…in hair school…. That was something we were always told (black box dye limits what you can do) and saw it for myself!! Black box dye is no joke!!

Cosmo student her, I just did this to a lady like 3 months ago. She had been using black box die for years. Came to the school wanting a perm. I was given this client and my instructor insisted that it would be okay….. it was not okay! 😓

SOOO , to add on to this. I had a girl come in with black box dye, I did a Strand test and everything was fine. Did a platinum card and the foils were HOT. had to pull them early. SOOOO SCARY.
