I love how Tolkien went through the horrors of the first world war, and still decided to make a story based around friendship and good always winning against evil

There wasn’t even a word for PTSD until the 80s. I was struck by how perfectly he described it.

Hard to believe we wouldn't have the Lord of the Rings if Tolkien didnt get sick and end up in a medical ward. Everyone else in his company was killed except him because of it.

Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam? Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

Its how he wrote the characters that always stuck with me as a very traumatized little 11yo. It was the first time I got to see a hero finish the journey, but never leave it mentally. Stg it validated me more than any person in my life

People who don’t understand Frodo don’t understand grief and mourning a life you could’ve lived.

I really believe that Christopher Lee knowing Tolkien had deeper context than behind-the-scenes stuff portrays. Two war veterans who basically grew up in conflict, fighting evil, while those they fight for don’t understand their deep trauma from doing so. Feeling so alien. They understood each other so.

I never forget for a second that these stories were written by a soldier for his son.

Took me a long time to learn that healing doesn’t mean fixed, it means adjusting to the version of you that came back out.

Tolkien lost all but one of his childhood friends, possibly only surviving himself because he was an officer. Went home seeing fellow soldiers come back shells of their former selves. Got married had children and had to watch two of his sons go for WW2.

This is why I love Tolkien and LOTR. It captures the true essence of pain, but it is also incredibly hopeful and powerfully inspirational - without denying hardship. It is about a story where hardship never had the last word, even when it seemed like everything was lost, destroyed, and ending. 🥺 I think this is why there haven’t been many fantasies that have never quite caught the real magic of LOTR
