I often find the premises of Diabolical Lies episodes off-base and weak in factual research. They really put me off with their episode on celebrity disordered eating/weight loss in the public eye, as they seemed to take the position that commenting on women’s bodies is never okay, which as someone who suffered from an eating disorder and was heavily influenced by media and celebrity culture in the late 90s/early 2000s, I strongly disagree with. The premise that Alix Earle never talks about how hard she’s working is also bafflingly false. She actually talks about how hard she tried to become an influencer and how much she wanted it all the time. I’m not an Earle acolyte, but she regularly pops up on my feed discussing how much effort she’s putting in and how hard she’s hustling, so I’m baffled by making her the exemplar of masked effort / performed effortlessness.

Yes! The hidden agency of “inevitability” is one of the most important lessons to learn for critical thinking, not just for the present / future but especially when studying the past. I was in a history department when Mubarak was ousted and a scholar of Egypt said “Ah yes now is the time when historians will stop talking about this as impossible and start saying it was inevitable.” You have to really actively practice centering human agency!
