I sometimes say you gotta hurt it to heal it. I broke my leg and ankle and had the same surprise of the stiffness but indeed it does loosen with up time. I highly suggest a portable foot bath that heats. Been my lifesaver

I broke mine 16 years ago pilon fracture and I’m a nurse. Take the metal out in 2012. My ankle is pure junk and arthritic. I get injections every 4 to 6 months for pain. My doctor thought I would get maybe three years out of it after he took the plates out and I’m still going strong with my injections. The ankle was such a mess and is such a mess as far as arthritis that my injections can’t hurt it any more than it is.

Two months ago I broke both bones on my left leg and both bones pierced through my ankle (compound fracture). I got a long ways to go. It’s awful! Hope you feel better soon!

I broke both bones like you in my ankle, I have 2 plates, 23 screws and a bone graft from my hip where they needed to add bone from shattered bone that fell on floor from surgery, the stiffness will always be there, as well as swelling, it gets better but, do lots if stretches daily, it helps. I'm 19 years from my accident, I wish you well on your recovery

Trimalleolar fracture in 2023. I had to push really hard in PT past the stiffness. Stretching hurt sooo bad but I got most of my mobility and range of motion back. That being said, still get pain where the metal is. I can run with a brace, I don’t quite trust my ankle to jump or do anything too crazy though.

I had a similar hardware situationship... lucky for me it was my left foot (unlucky that I can no longer start my son's f150 with a manual) but my partial hwr helped a lot at 14 months post orif. I'm 3 years po. it only gets better with heat and winter scares me

8 months post surgery still dealing with stiffness. One thing I’ve learn that’s helping is not just stretching the calf and ankle but doing full body stretches. Those muscles connected to the ankle and calf are stiffening during limited use too.
