The Weeping Goddess 🏺 | Why does this goddess look like she is crying? The dark streaks beneath her eyes look almost intentionally added to resemble tears. But they are actually the accidental result of one of the features that once made her look more lifelike: bronze eyelashes. This 2nd-century AD marble head, found near the Acropolis and probably representing Aphrodite, once belonged to an acrolithic statue. Only the exposed parts of the body, like the head, hands, and feet, were made from expensive stone. The rest could be constructed from wood and covered with other materials. And she would have looked completely different when she was new. Her marble face was highly polished. Traces of red survive in her hair, probably as a base for gold leaf, meaning much of it may once have been gilded. An additional hairpiece was likely attached to the top of her head. Her eyes were probably assembled from different materials, with ivory for the whites and dark stone for the irises. And along the eyelids were tiny bronze eyelashes. Over the centuries, that bronze oxidized. The corrosion ran down the polished marble beneath her eyes, leaving the dark streaks that now make her appear to be crying. It is also a great reminder of how misleading our image of “white marble” Greek sculpture can be. Ancient statues could be painted, gilded, dressed, inlaid with different materials, decorated with metal, and fitted with separate hairpieces, jewelry, and other details. The sculptures we see today are not necessarily the sculptures ancient people saw. Sources: Acropolis Museum. "Head of a Goddess Statue. Probably Aphrodite." EAM 177. Delivorrias, Angelos.
