“See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” is a famous expression traditionally represented by the Three Wise Monkeys: 🙈🙉🙊. The three monkeys symbolize three principles: “see no evil”, meaning to avoid looking at or witnessing wrongdoing; “hear no evil”, meaning to refuse to listen to harmful, malicious, or immoral things; and “speak no evil”, meaning not to spread harmful words, gossip, lies, or negativity. The symbolism is most strongly associated with Japan, where the three monkeys are known as Mizaru (見ざる), Kikazaru (聞かざる), and Iwazaru (言わざる). Their names are wordplays based on Japanese verbs: mi means “see,” kika comes from “hear,” and iwa comes from “speak,” while “-zaru” is an old negative form meaning “not.” The famous depiction of the three monkeys is often linked to the Tōshō-gū Shrine in Nikkō, Japan, particularly a 17th-century wood carving above the shrine’s sacred stable. However, the idea itself is much older than this carving. Similar teachings about avoiding evil by not seeing, hearing, or speaking it existed in earlier Chinese philosophical and religious traditions, and the concept is often connected to teachings attributed to Confucius, although the exact origin of the three-monkey image is debated. Over time, the symbol spread beyond Japan and became internationally recognized. In modern culture, the phrase can have both a positive and a negative meaning: positively, it can represent refusing to participate in cruelty, gossip, hatred, or wrongdoing; negatively, it can describe someone who deliberately ignores a problem by choosing not to see it, hear about it, or speak about it. Today, the Three Wise Monkeys remain a universal symbol of silence, discretion, morality, ignorance, and the choice to turn away from evil, depending on the context in which they are used. #tiktoktrend #3wisemonkeys #hearnoevilseenoevilspeaknoevil #xzybca #fypシ゚viral
