@randomvideos.365: This incredible archival footage captures one of the most legendary moments in classical music history, featuring Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires. During a live lunch concert in Amsterdam in 1999, Pires was visibly shocked as conductor Riccardo Chailly launched the orchestra into Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. She had practiced and prepared a completely different concerto for the performance. Realizing the mix up as the orchestral introduction began, Pires buried her head in her hands in panic. Conductor Chailly reassured her from the podium, encouraging her to play from memory and reminding her that she knew the piece inside and out. With incredible poise and focus, Pires composed herself and came in right on cue when the piano entry arrived, performing the entire complex concerto flawlessly without a single mistake or sheet music in front of her. The astonishing display of mastery and photographic musical memory remains an iconic testament to her artistry. #music #classical #mozart #piano #orchestra
There is a moment, just before she begins to play, where the expression on her face has such pathos, such doom, the look of someone matching to the gallows. Then she just pours out her talent like wine flowing from a cup.

I wonder how this sits in her memory. Is this a moment of pride or embarrassment for her? Clearly it’s spectacular, but artists are hardest on themselves

“You know it so well!” That’s leadership. He didn’t panic. He gave her the confidence to do what he knew she could do.

Super niche, but for Sterling Point fans, this is the level of pressure Rory was trying to explain and that is why he broke his own hand.

I was lucky enough to play this with an orchestra when I was 16. It is an incredible piece. I stuffed up in the opening bars and the conductor said to me, “You’re not going to do that opening night, are you?” 😂😅 She definitely locked tf in. But oh that long intro from the orchestra…a blessing and a curse!

The look on her face. I know that feeling and I deeply despise it. That stomach drop panic moment. Beautiful moment.

What a conductor as well! He took that in stride and gave her the confidence to showcase the skills she has! Sometimes stress can get in the way of performance and he showed that he believed in her! Wow

I should really find out the context, but it's insane to me that they didn't rehearse together prior to the performance.
I have nightmares that resemble this situation! 😳😳😳

Musicians practice so much that by the time you perform a piece it is memorized. I don’t use sheet music for anything once I’ve mastered it. It’s just in your brain and in your hands. She hadn’t practiced it, but she will never forget it. It just becomes embedded.
