@mixedcoupleinchina: Saint Sophia Cathedral (圣索菲亚教堂, Shèng Suǒfēiyà Jiàotáng) is one of the most iconic symbols of the city of Harbin, in Heilongjiang province, in northeastern China. •Architectural style: Neo-Byzantine/Russian Revival style, characterized by its distinctive red bricks and green onion dome. •Height: Approximately 53.3 meters. •Year of construction: Begun in wood in 1907 and expanded/rebuilt in masonry starting in 1923 (the expansion work was completed in 1932). •History: It was originally built by Russian troops as a military church in connection with the Manchuria/East China Railway. After the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949), it ceased to function as a place of worship and was used for several years as a warehouse, before being restored in the 1990s and transformed into a museum (Harbin Architectural Art Gallery). #harbin #saintsophiacathedral #chinatravel #china #cathedral
