I'll tell you why. Because it's extremely painful. When the cells dilate. And it causes the nerves in your spinal cord to feel like they're on fire. And it makes you extremely restless, and you're only thing your brain can think of is to take off as many layers of your clothes as possible to cool down. You just want the pain to stop. And it's not just on land. It's extremely common in the water. When hypothermia sets in for people to shed what clothing they have on. What I worked as a rescue diver, it was mostly recovery. People who had then in the water and not drowned right away. Maybe they were pulled out in a rip Current? or pulled out to open ocean, where they had to wait for hypothermia to creep in. They're found naked. They shed their bathing suit. Even though they were in the water and they were just wearing their swimsuit, they still took it off. Because their body wasn't so much pain, and they felt like they were burning alive. Years ago during the storm a northeaster. I found a woman on the beach. Who had sat down because she got extremely warm. And before she closed her eyes and was basically sleeping/ dying. She had taken off her main winter jacket. But luckily before she could take off more layers, she had fallen asleep. When I found her. Woke her up, and got her back to my jeep. Even in my jeep she was extremely restless. I had the heat cranking. And she said she was burning up. And I was making her pound water. As we waited for the ambulance.
