My lecturer at uni was an archaeologist who worked in Sudan, he HATED shabti figures because he found loads of them, it was hilarious hearing him talk about them 😂

When people talk about future archeology I just wonder why people forget about the internet still very much so existing. “They won’t know about TikTok!” They 100% will it’s a very documented change in social culture. The reason why archaeologists spend most of their time digging stuff up all over the world is bc there was no global archive like the internet

I always think about random paintings of memes being found and them thinking that maybe we worshiped Gojo or triple T like we do for cave paintings

phones probably wouldn't be preserved well tbh, the acidic battery would mix with soil and degrade it

i feel like soon, swollen batteries in old phones will become a serious problem. my old phone tried to lowk explode on me and it was SO difficult to dispose of safely without leaving it in the garden in rice and hoping for the best. check your old phones guys

they are gonna use them to date sites like we do now with Roman pottery (trends in pottery lasted few years so you can get close to the decade)

they'll probably also find the millions of user manuals that have been buried in landfills

if we become an archeology topic it means we were dead long ago to a point where our documentation has started to disappear (otherwise there would be no need to study our civilizations) so i guess most phones would be in an important decomposing state. what could be left though are batteries since it takes ages to decompose

yeah and the number of shady hard drives out in landfills will have a staggering effect too

whenever I read posts like this I sigh and wonder, do y'all think we're gonna get slimed like dinosaurs and discovered by a future intelligent species or something?? what's the thought process behind this?

FFXIV kind of does this actually. There's an old very advanced civilization who disappeared and left a SHIT ton of technological stuff behind. The current society doesn't really know what they are, and just call them tomestones, including some who are definitely smartphones. Since they don't know how those things are even meant to be used, they're basically just used as curiosity items and a form of currency to trade for certain items. Fun stuff
