Some artists have released new albums only a few months after their previous projects, while others have taken several years between releases. This video looks at some of the shortest gaps between consecutive albums by major artists, based on the original release dates of their studio albums. One of the most notable examples is Taylor Swift, who released folklore on July 24, 2020, followed by evermore on December 11, 2020 — just 4 months and 17 days apart. Both albums were surprise releases and were created during the same period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ariana Grande also released two albums unusually close together. Sweetener was released in August 2018, followed by thank u, next in February 2019, only 6 months apart. The second album was largely created following the events of the previous year and was released less than six months after Sweetener. Historically, short album gaps were much more common than they are today. The Beatles, for example, released multiple studio albums within the same year during the 1960s. Their second album, With the Beatles, arrived only around eight months after their debut Please Please Me. More recently, artists such as Beyoncé and Doja Cat have also released major projects relatively close together. Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Cowboy Carter were released 1 year and 8 months apart, while Doja Cat’s Hot Pink and Planet Her were separated by 1 year and 7 months. The length of time between albums can depend on many factors, including an artist’s creative process, touring schedule, label plans, collaborations and the amount of material recorded during a particular period. A shorter gap does not necessarily mean an album was produced quickly, since songs can be written and recorded months or even years before an album is released. The dates in this video refer to the original release dates of the albums, rather than deluxe editions, reissues or later expanded versions.
