2 years ago I was on a business trip when I learned my Mom passed away. I couldn’t hold my tears while checking my bag. I apologized to the agent, told him I couldn’t control it. Upgraded to first class with his condolences. I will never forget that act of kindness. I don’t even remember the cabin experience but I remember that agent.

a friend of mine always treats the cabin crew and he's never got upgraded but they treat him so so well in exchange. extra drinks every time they come around, they gave a little business class amenities kit.

Life hack, befriend / date a pilot then always travel with their airline and they can get you upgraded regardless if they’re flying or not

We missed our connecting flight with ana and was told they didn’t know when the next economy flight was. My husband said he’d deal with it as being nice wins 🙄 wasn’t working so I started the water works and said it was the start of our honeymoon. And boom we were upgraded to business class 🥰

Corporate travel agent here and spend my days literally booking these flights out for execs. We struggle to get availability on popular routes. The days of the random upgrade are sadly mostly (because I know it happens VERY occasionally) over.

most of airlines are not allowed to give free upgrades anymore. I've been giving chocolates to the crew for couple of years now (and I fly a lot) and nothing. Every time I ask, even when there is lots of free seats in business, they tell me that I have to pay and it would be not fair to those who have actually paid to give anyone free upgrade
