@gray.area.finance: Replying to @Sterling £70k sounds like a huge salary… but what was £30k worth 30+ years ago? 👀 Using inflation, £30k in 1991 is roughly equivalent to £71k today. So has £70k really become the new £30k? The answer is more complicated than you might think. #s#salaryuks#salarybreakdowns#salaryrealityu#ukfinancep#personalfinanceuk
£70k is an ok salary but when 40% of any increase is lost in taxation small annual increases won’t make much difference. The Higher Tax Bracket needs to be raised to £100k.

Ye its difficult, I’ve been tryna tell ppl these tax brackets are rough! Also most ppl earning above £50k didn’t get those jobs without having a degree so sfe repayments are basically essential. Not to mention the increased workload (managerial vs doing the work) its not all sunshine and rainbows. Its a good salary objectively but that doesn’t make it a good salary in our current economy

70K is not a big salary, especially when living on your own.

70k wasn't enough for me to save anything while single. After student loans and salary sacrifice pensions/car payments, my pay cheque is barely over £3k

It’s not huge but it’s still decent. I earn a little over that and drive a nice car and take a couple of holidays each year while still being able to save. You just have to prioritise what luxuries are important to you.

Also the people saying ‘that’s a huge salary’ don’t take into account not getting child benefit at that level

the basic comparison between a 50k and 70k job is depressing, only an additional £970 a month from a £20k pay increase.

Or go on benefits with a PIP, UC and three kids (one with a Child Disability Payment) and it’s tax free. For life and you never have to go on a Teams call. Ever again.

I earn £1125 a week as a subby and take home £900 a week after deductions. Would you consider this a decent amount? I don’t pay into a pension as a like to spend my money! Also, I usually get back 5k from HMRC.

In 1991, aged 22, I was on £8500 a year (40 hour week), which in 2026 is £23,700, below minimum wage today at £26,436.80 (40 hour week)

And being Scottish, you hit more tax bands and pay more tax at that level. I’ve been saying for years that £70k today is basically the new £45k from when I started my career in 2012. Inflation-wise, it really isn’t far off. £100k still seems to carry this outdated perception of being a huge salary, when in real terms it’s roughly equivalent to what £65k was in 2012.

Inflation calculations do not seem to relate to real world conditions eg housing costs, utilities, services etc.
When you see things like energy, utilities, council tax, transport costs all going up well above inflation, you have to wonder how the rate of inflation is calculated and whether it is realistic.
