David Angell :
I was an independent redneck and had the best of both worlds. I leased space in a medical annex attached to a level II trauma center with 50 other physicians and specialists. We were independent but combined orders for phone, security, supplies, maintenance, and housekeeping for cost savings.
I designed and leased 4000 sq ft. with 4 fully equipped operatories, 2 consult rooms, recovery bay, 2 private offices, business office, staff lounge, and comfortable reception area. I employed an RN, 2 OR technicians, 3 front end personnel and an instrument handler.
I could be to the OR or ER in a brisk 90 second walk. I had immediated access to cardiologists, ENT, plastics, endocrinologist, nephrologist, internests, nuclear medicine, chemotherapy and infectious disease personnel. We all gathered weekly for a luncheon and CE presentation. I was treated like family and highly respected. Though independent we had our own in house referral network.
I reduced my fees a bit and accepted full payment at the time of the service. I took no government insurance and would accept nothing over a 15% discount on insurance covered procedures.
I built my business on competence, integrity, communication, bedside manner, and quality of care. I gave hugs and prayed with my patients.
I was not the wealthiest surgeon in the area but had a great work/life balance, house on the lake, 37' sailboat, amazing wife and 2 terrific daughters. We were always greatful to God for being the center of our family and my practice. I worked in the office 4 days a week and provided free care to the underserved 1 day a week.
We attended weekly Mass and did yearly mission trips.
My dear friend, do what I did your cup will runneth over beyond all measure...and when you retire you will be remembered for truly making a difference in the lives of others.
Blessings on your day
Dave.
