So many people in these comments are speaking with absolute authority on a subject they didn't even know existed until the newest Odyssey came out. Now everyone's favorite book is the Iliad and they've studied Greek history for years and know more than archeologists on the subject.

The sea people were literally just bandits who got their hands on ships somehow, basically ancient pirates, not everything has to be this intricate mystery with layers of theories

Troy is not a historical event and is mostly mythology if it happened.

fun fact: the Achaeans of Homer's tales were likely part of the sea peoples.
During the reign of Ramesses, there were Egyptian records mentioning the "Ekwesh" people and contemporary Hittite records also mentioned the "Ahhiyawa"

It wasn't all happening the same time exactly, but they were all set in the late Bronze age, just before the collapse. The Sea Peoples were also a migrating group of families moving to from the Agean, due to Bronze age collapse from either earthquakes, diseases, drought, etc.

Around 1200 BCE, during the traditional era of the Trojan War, Mesoamerica was already developing complex societies. The Olmec center of San Lorenzo was flourishing in what is now Veracruz, Mexico, with monumental stone sculptures, trade networks and powerful religious traditions. Their beliefs included early forms of supernatural beings and deity traditions that influenced later Mesoamerican religions. This was centuries before the Maya and more than 2,000 years before the Aztecs. 🐍

the Mycenaeans, before arriving on the shores of Illium, had spent 5yrs attacking Troys allies (and also the kingdoms of those who were bound to answer their call, but refused to), around the Mediterranean, excusing it as ill winds, or godly intervention, before focusing Illium (while some factions continued to raid nearby kingdoms during the 10yr siege); n then Odysseus spent another 10yrs raiding what was left of those kingdoms. note that the Egyptians record that they were sacked multiple times, about 5-10yrs apart, n claimed it was the same peoples ea time.
