Quick clarification, ive ADMIRED Sak Yant and its sacred ceremonies for years and have WANTED one since 2023. I chose to have mine performed by an Ajarn and I follow the rules and guidance I was given. I understand wanting to protect something sacred to your culture. But making assumptions about my intentions and sending hate without knowing my experience is NOT the way to do it. please don’t turn a lack of information into a reason to hate someone.

Thai woman here. You do realise it will act as a curse if you don’t live by the rules of these Sak Yan. You can not drink alcohol, or take any drugs. You can not lie, at all. You cannot kill anything, including insects. You can’t eat left overs. You can’t eat food at weddings or funerals. You can’t have laundry be above your head. There’s certain bridges you can’t cross. SO MANY MORE. Do Not Think That The Power Of The Yant Will Protect You If You Intend To Use Those Powers For Bad Deeds. It’s not just some cutesy or cool art that you can get! just cause you have “admired” it. It’s literally cultural appropriation.

A good rule of thumb I live by as a whitie is to not get any culturally significant tattoos that aren’t my own heritage

As a Thai, I’m more confused about non-Thai or non-southeast Asians mad in the comments 😂 it’s not even your culture, why judge so harshly? If you do your research and respect it, I don’t see the issue

fucking hate this white people argument of “every local there was so happy with it so you’re opinion is void” because it’s almost like locals who are providing you with services aren’t going to say shit? it’s the ones who aren’t forced to interact with you for money that are going to be honest. i’m white and im converting to my partners country’ hinduism, even then after a fully traditional ceremony granting me a part of the religion im still insanely hesitant to get their version of om or anything tattooed on me because i am still white and it still isn’t my culture like ..

And also, when i was in thailand every single local that i had encountered with after getting the sak yant looked very happy and appreciative. Especially my hotel staff and the local food places i ate at. So please, be nicer. Literally all im asking

Let me educate the people that are confused. Sak Yant CANNOT be done by regular tattoo artist bc they lack the spiritual authority, sacred blessings, and proper chanting required to "activate" the talisman. “a Sak Yant tattoo is a sacred spiritual inscription rooted in Southeast Asian traditions, particularly in Thailand. The word "Sak" means to tattoo, and "Yant" comes from "Yantra," meaning a mystical geometric design. Applied by Buddhist monks or spiritual masters (Ajarns)using a hand-poked metal or bamboo rod, these tattoos are believed to grant protection, power, and good luck.” There is a sacred spiritual ritual and blessing performed by a Buddhist monk or a master (Ajarn), not just a piece of body art. There are rules that come with Sak Yant tattoo that are done THE CORRECT WAY! This isn’t just an aesthetic this is apart of Buddhism, Animism and Brahmanism (Hinduism.) I’m so sick and tired of people just seeing things and wanting to get it bc it looks “cool” WITHOUT EVEN DOING PROPER RESEARCH. Sak Yant tattoos come with strict rules They are based on the Five Precepts of Buddhism and specific cultural taboos. So no Sak Yant are not just “ironic tattoos” or “aesthetic asian tattoos” they have deep spiritual meanings and belief behind them, if you aren’t going to do research refrain from getting them or if ur not doing to get it done the right way PLEASE DO NOT GET THEM.
