Oom sobbed, hands clutching at Bam's sleeves. "I'm real, Oom," Bam whispered, softly wiping the tears from Oom's cheeks with her thumbs as Oom stared at her intently, drinking in every feature of her face to convince herself it was true. "Are you hungry?" Bam asked lovingly, brushing a soft strand of hair behind Oom's ear. Oom nodded weakly. But the second Bam began to stand up to fetch something, Oom gasped and lunged forward, grabbing Bam's wrist tightly, panic flashing in her dark eyes as if Bam were about to vanish into thin air again. "It's okay," Bam reassured her, turning back immediately to wrap her hand over Oom's. "Baby, let's go downstairs. I'll cook for you." Bam held her hand securely, intertwining their fingers, and Oom followed her out of the room and down the stairs, refusing to let go for even a single second. In the bright kitchen downstairs, Bam set Oom down on one of the high stools near the island counter. True to her promise, Oom kept one hand firmly anchored on the hem of Bam's shirt while Bam moved around the kitchen, preparing a warm bowl of minced pork congee with a soft-boiled egg. "You're going to burn yourself if you keep standing so close to the stove, baby," Bam teased softly, chuckling as she stirred the pot with one hand while holding Oom's hand with the other. "I don't care," Oom murmured, leaning her chin on Bam's shoulder from behind, watching the steam rise. "I just want to stay like this." Standing by the kitchen entrance, Lingling, Lena, and Orm, who had quietly lingered downstairs out of deep concern, watched the pair clinging to each other at the stove.
