it works by balancing both sides cause the center of the mass is at the middle part, but if u put an extra mass on the edge, it'll move the whole system's center of mass close to the extra weight, so if u slide ur hands, the hand that's closer to the mass won't slide. instead, the other hand would slide right to the one thats closer to the extra mass, in order to stabilize the whole system
