@agewellwithdrstep: Want to age well? As a geriatrician, these are the 3 things I’ve seen make the biggest difference: 1. Multicomponent physical activity (the highest-yield habit). Combine aerobic, resistance, balance, and flexibility work. Progressive resistance training is essential for preventing sarcopenia, frailty, and osteoporosis, and balance training helps prevent falls. Any activity counts. The goal is avoiding inactivity, and benefits show up even below the 150 min/week target. 2. Sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours. Poor sleep quality accelerates biological aging. Behavioral strategies like CBT-I are first line, since medication is generally avoided in older adults due to an unfavorable risk-benefit profile. 3. Cognitive, mental, and social health. The American Geriatrics Society frames healthy aging across five domains, and cognitive health, mental health, and social engagement are right up there with chronic disease and injury prevention. Social support, community engagement, lifelong learning, and preserved independence show up again and again across healthy-aging research.
