A man paid for my food once. in the line at the shop before work, he was in the line ahead of me and I didn't know he paid until I got to the cashier. he left, I didn't get to thank him properly or anything. if the dude really wanted to cover her dinner, that's the way to go about it.

I went on a solo date several years ago to my favorite sushi restaurant and as I was wrapping up my meal the waitress came over and told me a gentleman paid for my meal. to this day I don't know who he was. I never interacted with anyone other than staff while dining. she told me that he was also dining in and asked her to wait till he was gone before she let me know he paid. simple act of kindness.

But my question is why is the staff allowing this…? Why not go to her and ask “hey this man wants/offered to pay for your meal, is this okay with you?” Cause that simple conversation could have nipped this in the bud. She would have said no thanks I can pay my own meal but say thank you for me. Then she pays and leaves. The restaurant failed her cause they think this is some magical Disney moment nonsense and they are going to see love at first sight or something.

I once went to eat alone at a restaurant and I can't tell you how many times I was asked by the staff if I was waiting for someone to show up. How difficult is it to comprehend that someone is going to a restaurant to eat alone? I know that's not the issue here but it just reminded me of that and it was weird how I had to overly justify eating by myself.
