The invoice for a new life never comes all at once. It arrives in small moments, for years. Your new life is going to cost you your old one. It cost me a career I was good at, the kind of good where you stop having to try to be good at your job you just are. It cost me bedtimes I was too buried in books to sit through. It cost me evenings my husband carried alone so I could study. It cost me dinners I turned down, invitations that slowly stopped coming, friends I ended up loving from a distance because there were only so many hours and I was spending them all on becoming someone new. Nobody warns you that reinvention gets paid for in the ordinary things. The missed messages. The “not tonight.” The version of you everyone was used to, that suddenly is no longer familiar to them. Deciding to leave a career I was good at to start something completely new cost me a lot. I paid the price of all of it and here’s the thing: I would do it again in a heartbeat because here is what those years actually bought me. 🫰My children watched their mother start over again at 40 and learned, without me ever giving a speech about it, that you can begin anything at any age. 🫰 My relationship came through a season that asked everything of us, and we came out the other side steadier, because we had to learn how to hold each other under real, real pressure. 🫰And somewhere in the studying and the failing, I became a woman who trusts herself. 🫰 The qualifications with my name on it, are the part you can see but the part that compounds is what beginning again trained in my nervous system which was the capacity to stay regulated while I was visibly bad at something. To trust a knowing long before any proof had arrived. Because that is the order it comes in. The knowing first. The evidence later. So yes, becoming a beginner has costs to it. But the biggest, most profound, most compounding, most lucrative cost of my whole life was becoming a beginner again. I am still paying it and it is still paying me back and I would not want to be anywhere else because becoming a beginner will always be one of the biggest gifts you give yourself 💛
