In the thirteenth century, Muslim engineer Hasan al-Rammah described a strange naval weapon he called an “egg which moves itself and burns.” Its flattened pear-shaped shell was made from curved iron sheets and sealed with felt. Inside were naphtha, metal filings, and an incendiary mixture. Rocket propulsion was intended to send the weapon moving across the water toward an enemy target, while two projecting rods may have helped stabilize it. It was not a modern guided torpedo—and there is no firm evidence that it was successfully used in battle.
