@kendraworth: The whole point of discipline is to TEACH our kids the underlying skills they are missing, and traditional punishment doesn’t do that. It simply aims to deter a child from doing something again without giving them any positive replacement behavior that they can do instead, so it’s very ineffective long-term since there’s no actual skill building happening. I only use natural or logical consequences with my children that are directly connected to their misbehaviors & it works so well to truly change both their outward behavior & inward thought processes. My oldest child who I almost 6 is now so familiar with the types of consequences that I give that she can help me come up with them. When she’s misbehaving, I’m able to sit with her & discuss what she did wrong & what her logical consequence should be. Doing this helps her truly LEARN the moral lessons that I’m trying to teach because it shifts the responsibility to herself instead of her becoming resentful toward me for whatever punishment I decide to give her. She is such a kind-hearted, wonderfully behaved girl & it’s amazing to see the fruits of your labor when you’ve been gentle parenting from the beginning 💗 Make sure to follow me for all things evidence-based parenting and no-tears sleep training from a certified teacher, longtime nanny & mom of 3! Unfortunately, my 5 1/2 year-old took at the opposite direction. I was telling him that the consequences I was using with him did not seem to be working. What does he think we should do? So he asked what used to happen to me when I didn’t listen and I told him that I would get hit and he suggested that we try that. 😭🤦🏽‍♀️

I tried modeled breathing to calm down today with my 20 month old and he imitated it right away and calmed right down! Thank you for continuing to share your methods.

This is soooooo good. As someone who is a behavior specialist turned private nanny, I love to do this. I’ll give two or three options of acceptable consequences and have them pick. It gives them autonomy, makes them feel involved, lowers adverse behaviors AND keeps me in charge while also giving the child some sort of feeling of control

I hadn't realized you're the same person who's parenting tips have been resonating with me for a little while. im about 6 years out from adopting (there's a lot i want to be sure of, have prepared, and plenty of work to do on myself first) but the way you parent is very similar to how I think I'd like to go about it. I appreciate these videos.

we talk about consequences as well. kids are welcome to dispute a proposed consequence and collaborate on a solution. I also often use the phrase, "I'm going to need you to problem solve that. I believe that you can." and let them puzzle things out instead of just answering questions they already know the answer to. if they really can't figure it out they can come to me and I'll help them work through it

I love having them choose consequences. It's been so helpful with my very stubborn 5 year old.

When my cousin was that age, she would go put herself in "time out" on the stairs saying she needed to "take a break to act right." At that age, I was being forced to stand in a corner for hours with my nose touching the wall the whole time. Guess who's parents parented like you has a good relationship with their child now? haha
