I feel like I’m good at small talk, especially being in Hawaii. People like to ask questions and talk about Hawaii. My biggest struggle during the interview process is answering behavioral questions. I have years of experience and I know I have narratives in my background, but I’m not good at quickly recalling them.

Would love for you to do a TikTok on the initial screening call. I feel like I fumbled one the other week really badly, I think I over did it maybe? But I’m not sure what the best approach for that first screening call would be, because it’s so short I feel like I have to say so much as quickly as possible but I don’t think that’s the right approach

Some of the best advice I’ve ever received is, before an interview, work conference, big meetings. Look up the key players on LinkedIn, Facebook, instagram, web articles, anything you can find to uncover their personal hobbies, interests, passion projects etc. If there’s any mutual interest, research it and naturally work into conversation. Even better if you can work it into a comparison story or joke where that topic was clearly the highlight. It’s a balance and don’t do it for everyone. But it works.
