OVERSIZED IN AUSTIN There’s that joke about how many (fill in the blank) it takes to change a lightbulb. Well, we lost count of how many people, and pieces of machinery, it took to move this oversized load - and a second one just like it - through Austin, Nevada. Even the crews that lift the wires (by hand and by bucket truck) travel with the load. The semi in the back helps with both pushing and braking. Austin is an old mining town in the mountains along US Hwy 50 - aka The Loneliest Road in America. These massive loads were inching their way down the steep windy highway from the pass up above. They took up the whole road, and we waited over an hour for them to make it through so we could drive up that same big mountain. I think waiting for them to come through was more fun that inching down the mountain behind them like many poor vehicles had to. By: Janet McAllister
