Hey Simon. I have a dream. Me and my friend have a start up called Skyrix Technologies. We build software and alot of tech related products from individual lever to enterprise level. The dream we both share together me and my colleague is to see that by the end of university which is next year in June, we have something that will run sustainably, and have a bigger outreach to people out there. We currently have a website, Search skyrix technologies on the internet and you will what our goal is with this start up. Since we are based Uganda, life is hard financially and trying to get to where we hope is also hard because of the technological divide but nothing motivates us more than changing the perspectives of people out there to embrace the digital world with quality software. Simon respectfully. I honestly think a university degree is a good investment. E.g the technology in the mic you are using was done by electronics Engineers and technicians. You stand a better chance of success when you are educated than when you are not.

Unfortunately, not having a degree prevents you from progressing past a certain point in your career. There are exceptions, but not having a degree has delayed my career progression.

This is where I struggle with your argument, Simon. I agree that school needs rethinking, but telling a young person collecting their A-level results that their grades don’t matter or that university is a waste of time risks replacing one prescribed version of success with another. University isn’t right for everyone. Neither is entrepreneurship. Surely the goal should be agency giving young people the knowledge, experiences and opportunities to decide what a meaningful life and future look like for them. If that’s university, brilliant. If it’s an apprenticeship, employment, entrepreneurship or something entirely different, that should be equally valid. There shouldn’t be one “right” destination.
